Project Connect is a charitable dance group of professional and amateur volunteer dancers based in New York City. (www.danceprojectconnect.com) Project Connect brings original, interactive swing dance productions to underserved communities. Between 2018 and 2019, with the help of over 50 volunteers, we have performed at five nursing homes in three boroughs of NYC as well as at prominent arts organizations including Flushing Town Hall, Brooklyn Public LIbrary, and Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning.
We are currently raising funds to produce an interactive Lindy Hop theater piece for children titled "Swing into the Past: A Night At the Savoy". “Swing into the Past” showcases authentic Lindy Hop while educating the young audience about the history and cultural context of the dance. Your gift would help us bring our dance-based educational experience to more NYC students in the next year.
The plot follows two siblings who time travel to Savoy Ballroom in 1939. Through the children’s eyes, the audience experiences the magnificent Savoy Ballroom first hand, witnessing real events at Savoy and learning about the dance and music. The children play Cupid, bringing their grandfather and grandmother-to-be together. Happiness abruptly ends by a police raid like the one that eventually led to Savoy’s temporary closure in 1943.
We understand that these are trying times for us all due to the pandemic, and we are greatly appreciative of your support. Thank you from all of us.
