When hiking last spring out at Nason Ridge, my friend noticed a bird’s nest almost completely hidden in the ground cover near the trail. It was the nest of a towhee or junco. l had no idea they nested on the ground like that. I was so struck by the knowledge that these exposed, delicate eggs lying in a fragile nest of twigs and straw would be guarded by the mother bird, and hatched into new, sturdy young birds who would take their place in our wonderful forests. I took a picture, and it seemed like an obvious choice for the subject of my bowl this year.
